Background
The International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, promotes sustainable investment in the private sector in developing countries as a way to reduce poverty and improve quality of life. In addition to its investment work, IFC, through the Private Enterprise Partnership (PEP), executes a major donor-funded programme of private sector technical assistance and advisory services in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). PEP-MENA covers 20 countries, from Morocco to Pakistan, and is managed from IFC’s regional office in Cairo. The Alternative Dispute Resolution/Mediation Pilot Project for Morocco is part of PEP-MENA’s interventions to improve the business environment for private sector development in the region.
PEP-MENA, in partnership with the US Agency for International Development (USAID), identified as a strong need a pilot ADR/mediation project in Morocco. This ADR/Mediation pilot project is to serve as a model for Morocco and the MENA region.
In June 2008 ADR Center was awarded the pilot project for this fast-response project, which was fully implemented in July 2008. To achieve broader institutionalization for ADR/Mediation, ADR Center engaged with existing local organizations to develop training programmes and curricula on mediation/ADR. ADR Center designed and presented training courses and training materials tailored to meet the specific cultural and social needs of the country.
